Types of Foster Care


There are two types of foster care:

Group home

  • Facility housing six or more children
  • Subjected to many federal regulations
  • Counselor usually on duty 24/7
  • Counseling, tutoring and other services available


Kinship Care

  • Relatives, stepparents or any adult with a kinship bond to a child provides full-time care
  • Informal kinship care is when a child lives with relatives based on a decision by a family member. A social worker may be involved in the process; child welfare agency does not assume legal custody or responsibility
  • Formal kinship occurs when a court and/or Child Protective Services has ordered a child to live with relatives; child welfare agency has legal custody; however, relatives provide full-time care
  • Governed by state and federal child welfare laws

 

Becoming a Foster Parent


There are a few important requirements to becoming a foster parent. First, you must be over the age of 21 and have a regular source of income. Additionally, you must not have any record of felony convictions, must agree to a home assessment of all family members and commit to attend parent training sessions.
